What is Yoni Mapping and Why is it important?
Yoni mapping (self-massage) is an exploration of the pelvic bowl including inter-vaginal massage techniques that allows you to take a deep and powerful journey around one of the most sacred spaces on your body.
It is a process that aids in healing energetic wounds that may have come from birthing or sexual trauma. While it is incredibly useful for self-healing, it’s also a beautiful way to awaken spaces inside of you that you didn’t even know existed!
Often times when you’ve experienced a traumatic incident such as in child birth, a fall, or sexual assault, the energy of that experience is held in the tissue layers of your body. When left untreated, there is a potential for this energy to accumulate and create blockages/disconnect. This practice will help you release emotional and physical tension built up in the pelvis.
Letting your yoni set the pace for your healing is the key to this practice.
You never want to force your healing process. Instead view this is a sacred time to get to know your yoni and her response to touch.
Preparing Your Inner and Outer Temple
What You Will Need:
A Towel
Organic Lubricant or Massage Oil that is safe for vaginal use - if you have alot of scar tissue, castor oil mixed with a little sesame or coconut is amazing at dissolving these excess layers
A space prepared for your privacy and comfort
Pillows for neck and leg support
Optional:
An exploration tool such as a yoni wand
Candles
Incense or essential oils
A cup of soothing herbal tea
A journal
External and internal preparation are both equally important.
Start with setting up your surroundings. You might choose to dim the lights or turn them off completely. To soothe the senses, consider burning some of your favorite incense or adding essential oils to a diffuser.
If you feel called, you can even light candles to set the mood. This step is all about you and what makes you feel most comfortable. Make sure you are in a space where you can take as long as you’d like.
**Sacred space is lovely and the desirable way to most benefit from this practice, And….if finding time alone is challenging and you maybe have 10 minutes here and there for yourself, the practice is what IS most important. I recommend a spacious time the first time to get to know the process. Then, following, it’s okay if you do this in the shower 5 minutes, or 5-15 minutes laying in bed without all the sacred set-up. **
Next, it’s time to go inward.
Yoni is Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language, for vulva and translates to mean “sacred portal”. Connecting this portal to your heart is an incredibly beneficial way to begin this practice. This will allow you to tap into the intuitive wisdom of your wombi. The following is a practice you can use to connect to your pelvic bowl.
Consent to the Practice
The final step in preparing your inner space is asking your yoni for permission to do the practice. Check in to make sure that your yoni is fully open to being touched or penetrated. Consent begins with you, and asking for consent is a great way to honor your temple.
Yoni Mapping Self-Practice Technique
Begin by gently Massaging the Vulva. You may want to use an organic lubricant or oil. Make sure your hands are nice and warm and your lubricant is easy to reach. Place your towel beneath you to protect your sheets from the oils or lubricant.
As you massage yourself, take note of any tension that arises either in your pelvic area, vulva, vagina and anywhere else in the body.
Palpate along the outer and inner labia. Notice if there are any places where you feel pain or tension. If this happens, take a deep breath and ask your yoni if it is okay to explore this further.
You can either rest your finger or massage tool in the area for a moment, or can gently massage the area. Connecting breath to these places is important for helping the energy move.
When you feel ready, begin to palpate in a clockwise motion starting at the vaginal opening. Move along the vaginal walls towards the g-spot, and keep going until you reach the cervix. You can consider the entire area as a spiral, spiraling from the very outer edges of the pelvic bowl to the most inward.
Bonus Tip: Be mindful of your limits with this practice. The most important part of this is learning to listen to your body. If you only massage your inner thighs the whole time, that’s perfectly wonderful. The more you practice, the more you will open up, so give yourself time. The key here isn’t to orgasm, but to connect with your body, find the places of tenderness, and help energy to flow freely.
Partner Massage
You can always invite a partner to do this practice with you.
Get comfortable with this practice on your own first, and then try inviting them in and teaching them how to do it with you. This could be a doorway to healing deep relationship wounds.
Make sure that if you do, you are open in communication and letting them know how you prefer to be touched. Pelvic massage with the intent for healing is a completely different experience than one based around orgasm/sexual connection.
Processing the Experience
Once you’ve completed the practice, allow yourself space and time for what comes up. This could be a good time to journal about your experience of and take note of what came up during the practice.
Feelings You May Experience During a Yoni Massage:
Shame
Guilt
Grief
Pain
Joy
Excitement
Fear
Bliss
Numbness
Warmth
Tingling sensations
Know that anything that comes up is okay, and nothing to feel ashamed of. This is a practice, and the more you do it, the deeper you will be able to move into your healing journey.
The practice of self yoni massage is a powerful reclamation over your body and cultivating a healthy connection to the womb is something any woman can access.
